RAF ISMAILIA, ABU SUEIR, EL FIRDAN AND ABIYAD

My mother left Southampton docks on board the 'Orient Line' "SS Otranto" in January 1948. Along with many other Service dependants they moved without assistance.Their husbands were already in theatre so they, along with their children, and possibly for the first time in their lives, set off alone. It was a great adventure and the photographs you are about to see unveil are of distant times and times that will never be repeated.

I think a bit of a liberty taken by my Mum of Dad washing in cold

water in our back yard in 1948. She hasn't changed!

You can see how basic things were for service families in those

days. Lots of perks though!

Well, that's the Egypt box of tricks packed away now

back home to UK for a couple of years then RAF Khormaksar Aden.

Bye for now.

Family Dudding moved back to the UK by boat in January/February 1950. We docked at Liverpool, were housed in a Transit Camp in Liverpool (name escapes my Mother). She did not like the transit camp and moved up to Scotland to stay with her Mother in Paisley until my Father, now serving at Calshot near Southampton, was allocated a quarter. We then moved down to Calshot and lived there for two years or so prior to being posted to RAF Asmara and RAF Khormaksar. See section 'ASMARA' and 'ADEN' at top of header.
